ALVIN — The Dawson Eagles participated in the Alvin Lion's Club Holiday Tournament and finished with a 2-3 overall tournament record.
Head coach Mark Barre and his roundballers opened up the tournament with three straight losses to 5A Fort Bend Marshall (76-63), Houston Lamar (42-30), and 5A South Houston (46-43) before knocking off district rival Angleton (53-37) and 5A Channelview (59-44).
Barre was hoping to carry the momentum of the two-game winning streak into the new year when the Eagles opened up District 24-4A action on Saturday, January 2 against Angleton who fell to Dawson at the Alvin tourney.
After getting the 53-37 win over the Wildcats in Alvin, Barre had to be feeling pretty good entering he league opener.
However - things were different in the second meeting as Angleton took advantage of poor shooting and late-game turnovers by the Eagles to get the 51-43 win on the road at the Eagles Nest. Angleton starts off league play off at 1-0 while Dawson is 0-1.
The slow start proved costly for the Eagles. Jonathon Lewis hit the first shot for Dawson for a 2-0 lead. Angleton went on a 6-0 run to make the score 6-2 before Craig Grigsby hit a short jumper at the 3:15 mark of the opening period to snap a 4:40 scoring drought. Anthony Miles added another field goal with 2:56 left in the quarter which would be the last score for Dawson who trailed 9-6 at the end of the first eight minutes of action.
Things heated up for both teams in the second period as the Eagles outscored the Wildcats 16-13 as Miles hit a pair of 3-pointers, a field goal, and a free throw for nine of the 16 points. Jordan Rose added a trey while Darian Lazard and Michael Forte each chipped in a field goal to tie up the game at 22-22 at intermission.
Miles continued to be the strongest offensive weapon for the Eagles with six more points in the third stanza as the Eagles nipped the 'Cats 13-12 for a 35-34 lead entering the final eight minutes of action.
It would be the final quarter that would lead to the Eagles demise as Angleton when on a 14-3 run to build a 48-38 lead with 59 seconds left to go in the contest.
Rose hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 48-41 with 40 seconds remaining in the game, but the Wildcats would hit three free throws down the stretch to post the 51-43 final score.
Miles led all scorers with 17 points, but the Wildcats held him scoreless in the final frame.
Dawson committed three straight turnovers early in the fourth quarter that allowed the 'Cats to take over the lead and coast to the win.
The Eagles hosted Friendswood on Tuesday (late) and then will travel to face Brazosport on Friday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m. Dawson will be back at home on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Texas City.
