PEARLAND — Dawson head coach Mark Barre set a goal with his roundballers to finish at least 4-3 in the second round of district play which would probably get the Eagles into the playoffs. The goal is to finish in fourth place which is still an attainable target.
The Eagles got a first round win over Manvel (4-5) who currently sits one game ahead of Dawson (3-6) in fourth place. But the win gives them the Eagles the tie-breaker at this point.
Barre saw his squad knock off Angleton 63-45 to begin the second round which was a win that the young coach was looking to get.
After Angleton jumped out to an 11-6 first quarter lead, the Eagles rallied to take the second period 16-11 to go into the dressing room at intermission tied at 22-22.
The second half belonged to the Eagles as they ran past the Wildcats 20-9 in the third quarter for a 42-31 lead before cruising the final eight minutes 21-14 to get the 63-45 victory.
Anthony Miles was the game's leading scorer with 22 points, but he got help from Darian Lazard (12 points) and Piaget Gauthier (10 points).
When Dawson battled with league-leading and No. 3 area-ranked La Marque in the final game of the first round - the Cougars scored on the final shot of the game to nip the fiesty Eagles 69-67.
Friendswood 46 - Dawson 44 (OT)
Dawson traveled to Friendswood (21-5, 8-1) to face the No. 5 area-ranked Mustangs who are in second-place in the District 24-4A race behind league-leading La Marque. The Eagles are still in contention for the fourth and final playoff spot and they certainly gave the 'Stangs all they wanted before Friendswood's Jackson Griffon tipped in the ball at the buzzer in overtime to give Friendswood the hard-earned 46-44 win.
Friendswood had a 20-17 halftime lead before the Eagles tied up the game 26-26 entering the final eight minutes of play.
Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth period to make the score 39-39 at the end of regulation sending the game into an extra four minute period.
The two teams scored five points in the extra period to remain even at 44-44. Friendswood had the last possession of the period and, for the second game in a row, Jackson Griffon scored the final goal at the buzzer to give Friendswood a 46-44 win. Griffon finished the game as the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 10 points.
Anthony Miles fired in 20 points for the Eagles.
Dawson hosted Brazosport on Tuesday (late) and then will travel to face Texas City in a must-win situation on Friday, January 5 at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will return home to host Santa Fe on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.
