GALENA PARK — The Dawson Lady Eagles have shown a lot of improvement in their second year of varsity competition as they competed in the North Shore softball tournament against some strong 5A teams.
Head coach Amanda Spencer has some talented girls who are putting things together as a team and their efforts were rewarded by winning the North Shore team trophy.
Dawson opened up the tourney with a 9-1 win over Galena Park. Brooke McCumpsey pitched the Lady Eagles to the win as she allowed six hits, and struck out four. Taylor Duplechain, Rachel Rhodes (2 RBIs), and Vanessa Velazquez all had doubles. Dawson had nine hits.
The Lady Eagles blanked Pasadena 2-0 as Brook Graham tossed a no-hitter that included14 strikeouts. Bianca Pierce slammed a triple to knock in both runs in support of Graham's pitching gem. Taylor Dupleachin was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Dawson faced a strong 5A La Porte team and prevailed 4-2 as Graham picked up the win in the pitching circle that included 11 strikeouts while tossing a two-hitter.
Vanessa Velazquez was 2-for-4 hitting with a double and an RBI. Freshman Raegan Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with a walk and 2 RBIs to keep Dawson undefeated in the tournament the first day of competition.
Dawson lost to host North Shore 6-5 as Brook Graham had the loss.
"We lost the game on our defensive errors," Spencer said. "We were down 6-1 in the bottom of the 7th and had a good come back but fell short."
However, the Lady Eagles rebounded to beat 5A Sam Rayburn 1-0. Graham allowed only two hits and struck out 11 to pick up the win as the Lady Eagles finished the tournament 4-1 to claim the title.
"Our defense turned it around and was solid against Rayburn," Spencer said.
The lone run for Dawson came in the sixth inning when Taylor Duplechain led off the sixth inning with a triple. Bianca Pierce hit a sacrific fly to left field to plate Duplechain for the 1-0 win.
Dawson will now focus their attention on District 24-4A action when they host La Marque on Friday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. It will also be Parent Night for the Lady Eagles. Dawson will travel to Angleton to face the Lady Wildcats on Monday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m. and then will travel to Friendswood on Wednesday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m.
