PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles baseball team opened up District 24-4A action with a 3-2 loss to Angleton and then ripped off two straight wins over Friendswood (5-2) and Brazosport (5-2).
However, head coach Kerry Cox has seen his diamondmen drop two straight league games to Texas City (8-2) and Santa Fe (6-3) leaving them on the bubble to make the playoffs.
Since it is in the first round of district action, Dawson is certainly not out of the picture to advance to the post-season - especially after they got a strong quality win over No. 10 area-ranked Friendswood.
The Eagles faced district leading Texas City (11-7, 5-0), who is undefeated in league play, and the two teams battled during the first five innings of play with the Stingarees clinging to a 1-0 lead.
However, the wheels fell off for Dawson in the top of the sixth when Texas City scored seven runs for an 8-0 advantage.
Texas City pitcher Bradley Barnes allowed the Eagles only four hits with four strikeouts while Steve Mott drove in three runs with two hits to pace the offense for the Stings. Texas City pounded out a total of 13 hits.
Picking up hits for Dawson was Austin Smirtch, Nick Baldearena, Greg Bourn, and Grant Dougherty. Scoring both runs in the bottom of the sevening inning for Dawson was Dougherty and Travis Duke.
Santa Fe 6 - Dawson 3
Dawson (2-3) traveled to Santa Fe (3-2) to face the Indians and returned home with a 6-3 loss. Texas City is sitting atop of the district leaderboard with a 5-0 mark while Friendswood and Angleton are tied for second at 4-1, and Santa Fe has the fourth place spot at 3-2. Dawson gave Friendswood their one loss, but have fallen to the other three leading district teams which might have an effect on them in determining the four playoff teams.
Kyle Giusti and Andrew Yerrell each hit home runs for the Indians in the win. Dylan Ebbs got the win for Santa Fe (12-7, 3-2) pitching all seven innings and giving up six hits.
Mario Sanchez led the offense for Dawson going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Austin Smirch, Nick Baldearena, Greg Bourn (two-run double), and Travis Duke picked up the other four hits for the Eagles.
Chris Alfeld and Duke score the other runs for Dawson.
Dawson traveled to face Manvel on Tuesday (late). The Eagles will host La Marque on Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. The second round of district will begin on Tuesday, April 6 when the Eagles host Angleton at 7:00 p.m.
