PEARLAND — Dawson pitcher Travis Duke pitched eight innings while giving up only one run on two hits as the Eagles battled Manvel in a critical District 24-4A contest.
Both teams scored one run in the top of the fifth after neither team could muster any offense in the previous four frames.
Dawson scored in the top of the fifth and Manvel answered in their half of the inning leaving the score tied at 1-1.
The game went into extra innings and remained tied until the top of the ninth inning when the Eagles scored five runs to make the score 6-1. Kevin Krahl stepped on the mound in the bottom of the ninth to shutout the Mavs for the save and district win.
Mario Sanchez had two doubles with one RBI and one run scored. Duke had two RBIs with a double to help his own cause as the winning pitcher. Duke also worked his way out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the eighth inning.
Krahl was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double for an RBI and he also scored a run. Grant Dougherty had one hit and one run scored. Nick Baldearena had one hit and scored a run.
Dawson is now 3-3 in district.
The Eagles faced Angleton on Tuesday (late). Dawson will travel to take on district leading Friendswood on Friday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles will host Brazosport on Tuesday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m. At the present time - Dawson is in fifth place in the district standings as they begin the second round.
