PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles diamondmen are currently in a tie for fourth place in the District 24-4A standings. However, head coach Kerry Cox knows that the season isn't over yet and his team needs to continue to finish the season strong to advance to the post-season for the first time in their three-year history.
With four games remaining against Brazosport, Texas City, Santa Fe, and Manvel -- the Eagles will determine their own fate as Texas City, Friendswood, and Santa Fe are tied for first place at 7-2 while Angleton and Dawson both have a 5-4 record in a tie for fourth place.
Dawson hosted Brazosport, who is out of the running, on Tuesday (late). But wins over the final three teams on the schedule are going to be huge in determining the playoff order.
The Eagles made a strong statement in keeping their playoff hopes alive with a 5-3 win over Angleton last week.
The Wildcats picked up a run in the bottom of the second and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead, but Dawson came back to score two runs in the top of the fifth to knot up the score 2-2 and then added three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 5-2 advantage entering the final frame.
Angleton scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't pull out the critical win for both teams.
Dawson collected seven hits for five runs with the offense being led by Grant Dougherty who was 2-for-3 with one run scored. John Juneau was 2-for-3 including a double with three RBIs. Kevin Krahl was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Nick Baldearena scored two runs while Greg Bourn and Jarrell Crenshaw both had one hit each.
Friendswood 5 - Dawson 4
In the first round of District 24-4A action - the Dawson Eagles surprised the Friendswood Mustangs with a 5-2 win. The Eagles traveled to Friendswood to face the 'Stangs in the second round and almost swept the series, but came up short 5-4 in 13 innings.
Friendswood scored a run in the bottom of the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead, but the Eagles came charging back with three runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead. That's the way the game stayed until the bottom of the seventh when Friendswood was able to score a run to tie up the game at 3-3 to send the game into extra innings.
Both teams scored a run each in the 11th inning to make the score 4-4.
Friendswood's Brandon Hollier drove in Matt Kennemer with the game winning run in the 13th inning on a fielders choice to shortstop. Kyle Singleton picked up the win in relief.
Dawson got nine hits while Friendswood pounded out 10 hits, but the game was filled full of miscues from both squads. Dawson had nine errors while Friendswood had 12.
The Eagles will travel to face Texas City on Friday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. and then return home to face Santa Fe on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. Manvel will come to Dawson on Friday, April 23 at 7:00 to end the regular district season. La Marque, who was the final game of the district play, doesn't have enough players to finish the year so the Cougars elected to forfeit their final six games of the season.
