PEARLAND — The Angleton Wildcats won their third straight District 24-4A track championship, but a young Dawson squad made their presence known in only their second year of varsity competition.
Angleton scored 218 first-place points while Dawson finished second with 122.5 points. La Marque was third with 72 points followed by Manvel (64), Friendswood (55), Texas City (45), Brazosport (33) and Santa Fe (3).
Dawson had five first place winners and 14 regional qualifiers. The top three finishers advance to the regional meet.
The 1600 meter relay quartet of Ben Hudson, Dominque Charles, Kalin Isaac, and Joshua Taylor won the gold medal while also recording the fastest time in the state in this event. The Eagles will certainly be considered favorites at the 4A Region III meet and also at state provided they advance.
The 400 meter relay foursome of Taylor, Charles, Michael Asonye, and Hudson finished second with a time of 42.78.
Charles picked up a second gold medal with a first-place finish in the 400 meters (48.82). The Eagles swept this event as Jeffery Perkins was second (49.32) and Taylor was third (51.97) sending all three to region.
Maury Thibodeaux advanced to regionals with a win in the 800 meters (2:01.29) and a third place finish in the 1600 meters (4:43.64).
Sophomore David Parker won the high jump at 6-foot 7 inches though he is only 5-foot 10. He will certainly be a strong favorite at the regional meet.
Kennedy Estelle won the shot put with a heave of 52-06.25.
The 800 relay team of Devin Kilpatrick, Michael Asonye, Hudson, and Marcus Vaughn placed third in 1:30.59.
