Shelton brings home silver from state track meet


PEARLAND — Dawson senior speedster Jacolby Shelton qualified for the 6A state track meet in the 100 meters which was held at the Michael A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Shelton placed second in the state with a time of 10.38 while finishing behind Kesean Carter of The Woodlands who edged Shelton in 10.22.

Dawson also had freshman Chrystal Herpin qualify in two events -- the discus and the shot put.

Herpin finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 135-11 and seventh in the shot put with a heave of 40-03.50.

Pearland High School had two state qualifiers in senior pole vaulter Cole Burgess who cleared a height of 14-06 at the state meet that was good for eighth place. Senior Branson Ellis from Tyler Lee set a new state record with a height of 18-3.25 to win the gold medal.

Pearland sophomore Alex Kubicek placed eighth in the girls' pole vault by clearing 12 feet. Mackenzi Hayward from Lewisville Marcus won the gold medal with a height of 13-06.

The Woodlands won the 2018 boys 6A state title with 68 points to finish ahead of San Antonio Converse Judson who finished in second place with 49 points.

Desoto won the girls 6A state crown with 69 points while Lewisville Marcus was second with 42 points.
