Welch, Lady Eagles, Lady O's headline All-District softball picks

PEARLAND — It came as no surprise that the Dawson Lady Eagles would dominate the 2018 All-District 23-6A selections -- especially after claiming the league crown with a 12-1 record.

Dawson head coach Katelyn Welch was named District "Coach of the Year." The Lady Eagles finished 20-9 overall. The only disappointment for Dawson was their best-of-three series loss to the No. 4 seed Clear Falls Lady Knights.

After winning Game 1 with an 8-0 shutout victory, the No. 1 seed Lady Eagles dropped the next two games at home 3-2 and 4-1 to make a pre-mature exit from the post-season.

Junior pitcher Courtney Day was named as the District 23-6A MVP after she posted a 14-4 pitching mark. The Sam Houston commit pitched 121.2 innings, allowed only 17 earned runs while whiffing 143 batters. She gave up only one home run and finished with a sparkling 0.98 earned run average.

Day was also a warrior at the plate as she hit .521 with 15 runs scored, four doubles, and a team-leading 40 RBIs and 15 home runs.

Freshman Olivia Johnson was named as the "Newcomer of the Year" at shortstop. Johnson hit .292 with 17 runs scored, 12 RBIs, one double, one triple, and two home runs.

Dawson also had five players named to the All-District first-team.

Senior Isabella Richey (catcher) hit .446 with 17 runs scored, five doubles, and two home runs with 21 RBIs.

Junior Kyra Lundford (first base) hit .396 with 16 runs scored, 11 RBIs, five doubles, and one triple.

Junior Peyton Ellermann (outfield) hit .417 with 16 runs scored, 10 RBIs, one double, and one triple.

Junior Katelyn Day (Designated Player) hit .417 with nine runs scored, 13 RBIs, three doubles, one triple, and two home runs.

Junior Brooke Toler (at large) hit .297 with 11 runs scored, 11 RBIs, four doubles, and one triple.

Dawson had three players named to the All-District second-team. They were senior Gabrielle Chacon (third base), junior Kirsten Williams (outfield), and senior Alexis Zarate (utility).

Named as All-District honorable mention was junior Madison Smith and senior Giavanna Gardella.

Pearland Lady Oilers

The Lady Oilers struggled this season even though they advanced to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed behind district champion Dawson and runner-up Brazoswood who both entered the post-season as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

The Lady Oilers did win their bi-district best-of-three series in the playoffs as they swept the Clear Springs Lady Chargers 4-1 and 4-2, but were eliminated by the Atascocita Lady Eagles two games to one in the area round.

Pearland was well represented on the All-District first-team.

Senior pitcher Natalie Trujillo was a first-team pick as she posted a 3-4 record with 51.2 innings pitched with 44 strikeouts and a 2.44 earned run average.

Senior shortstop Janna Roberts (at large-infield) hit .392 with 20 runs scored, nine RBIs, three doubles, and four triples.

Senior Ashlin Moreno (outfield) hit .397 with 22 runs scored, 16 RBIs, three doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Fort fashioned a 5-1 pitching mark with 35 innings pitched, 33 strikeouts, and a 2.20 ERA. Fort also hit .243 with four runs scored, 10 RBIs, and one double.

Senior outfielder Kaylee Buck (at large) hit .500 with 27 runs scored, nine RBIs, and four doubles.

Named to the All-District second-team was senior Adrianna Chavarria (pitcher), senior Lauren Ochoa (catcher), sophomore Maddi Guillen (second base), senior Ryleigh Love (outfield), and junior pitcher Natalie Myers (at-large).

Named as an All-District honorable-mention was senior Casey Martin and sophomore Bridgett Verchiens.
