PEARLAND — Dawson gridiron standout Derrick Axtell recently received his Eagle Scout award on June 11. Axtell was a three-year starter for the Dawson football team and helped anchor an offensive line that produced one of the top offenses in the Houston area that led to the Class 4A Region III championship and to the 4A state semifinals in 2009.
Axtell completed work on his Eagle Scout project as he organized an environmental awareness activity on two separate weekends that involved marking neighborhood storm drains with no dumping markers and educating neighbors that storm waters flow directly to Galveston Bay.
Axtell obtained most of his supplies from the Harris County SWIM project; however, they were out of epoxy for adhering markers, so Axtell solicited the neighborhood where the drains were located and raised the needed funds for the epoxy. With the assistance of Troop 740 Scouts and adult leaders, over 200 storm drains were tagged with the no dumping markers.
His journey for the Eagle Scout award began on May 19, 2003 when he completed the Arrow of Light. The Eagle Scout was completed on March 25, 2010.
Along his journey, Axtell received the Medal of Merit on January 1, 2006 after he saved the life of a young child.
Axtell was recently a part of the first graduating class at Dawson High School. He signed a letter-of-intent to continue his education and football career with Central Lakes College, located in Brainerd, Minnesota. He plans to obtain a degree in Criminal Justice and has visions of becoming an FBI agent.
Axtell is the son of Brian and Sheri Axtell of Pearland.
