PEARLAND — The Dawson Lady Eagles are flying high after finishing 10th overall at the prestigious Pearland Volleyball Tournament that featured the top teams in the state.
Widely considered the pre-season state volleyball tournament, Dawson certainly has risen to the top of the area 4A teams proving they are going to be a serious contender for the District 24-4A title and looking to make a deep run through the playoffs.
However, that will come with time as head coach Lori McLaughlin is a big believer in taking one match at a time.
Dawson faced three strong teams on Saturday with wins over traditional powers Canyon Randall and Arlington Martin.
The Lady Eagles knocked off Randall 25-22, 19-25, 25-21 as Yewanda Akanbi led the offense with 12 kills while Olivia Underwood had 17 assists.
Arlington Martin fell to Dawson 25-23, 25-21 in a sweep as Akanbi had 10 kills and Katie Haynie had nine assists.
Cy-Woods beat the Lady Eagles 25-12, 25-21. Cameron Kazmierski had six kills and Haynie had 10 assists.
Dawson is now 19-5 overall for the season and ranked No. 1 in the Houston area among 4A schools.
Danielle Sullivan was selected to the All-Tournament team.
The 10th place finish was the highest of any Houston area team.
"This was the best finish ever for the Dawson volleyball program," McLaughlin said. "It was a great end to our tournament season and an even better start for our district play."
