When two undefeated teams face one another in the middle of the season with one ranked No. 1 and the other ranked No. 3 -- something has got to give with one team having to lose their first game of the year.
The Angleton Wildcats invaded The Rig to face a young, but talented Dawson team with their perfect records on the line.
Last season - it was Dawson who traveled to Angleton to face the speedy Wildcats who were undefeated. It was Dawson's first varsity season. The Eagles shocked the 'Cats 21-20 in overtime to be the only team in District 24-4A to knock off the eventual district co-champions.
Angleton's coaching staff and players waited a full year before getting to have a shot at avenging last year's loss.
Playing with a lot of intensity and aggressiveness - Angleton came out running on all cylinders and it didn't take long for them to break out to a 13-0 lead. The Wildcats opened the game with a trick play that burned the Dawson defense for a 52-yard touchdown.
It took only 17 seconds to post a quick 7-0 lead when quarterback Quandre Diggs pitched a a ball to Henry Josey who darted to his right and then fired a long pass to Roderick Butler who hauled in the ball for the score.
Dawson gave the ball back to the Wildcats when a bad snap was recovered by Angleton on the Eagles' five-yard line.
With 10:32 left in the opening period - Angleton was in front 13-0 after missing the extra point.
Dawson came right back on an eight-play, 56-yard drive as Lazard, Xavier Brown and Akeem Blackshire took turns at the Wildcat defense. Finally, Lazard ripped off a 28-yard scamper for a touchdown cutting the lead and getting some momentum back 13-7.
The Eagles stopped Angleton on a fourth-and-one to take over at the Wildcats' 43.
Lazard launched a pass to Micah Tillotson that covered 34 yards for the touchdown. Stuart Watkins added the extra point to make the score 14-13 with 35 seconds left in the opening period.
However, Angleton took over the second quarter and posted 20 unanswered points for a 33-14 halftime lead.
Unfortunately - the second period was the turning point that Dawson couldn't overcome in the second half as Angleton outscored Dawson 16-14 making the final 49-28.
Lazard was 12-of-24 passing for 153 yards and two TDs while rushing for 133 yards on 27 carries and two more scores giving him 286 total yards and four TDs against the area's No. 1 team.
Despite the loss - Dawson is now 5-1 and 2-1 in district and still very much in the running for a place in the post-season.
The Eagles will host Friendswood on Friday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig in a crucial game for both teams. The Mustangs, who were picked to challenge for the district title, fell to Santa Fe 29-28 and are 1-2 in the district standings.
