HOUSTON — For the second time in four years, Dawson head coach Eric Wells has been named as a "Coach of the Year" finalist by the Touchdown Club of Houston after leading the Eagles to the Class 4A Region III Division I title and another trip to the 4A Div. I state semifinals.
Manvel's Kirk Martin, who team is currently 15-0 and will be playing in the 4A Division II state championship against two-time defending state champion Aledo was named "Coach of the Year" at the event.
Wells was honored with some of the finest coaches in the Houston area including: Barry Abercrombie, Hightower; Willie Amendola, Dekaney, Gary Joseph, Katy; Jeff LaReau, La Porte; Chris Massey, Deer Park; Ed Pustejovsky, Cy-Fair; Ryan Roark, Angleton; and Mark Schmid, The Woodlands.
The Eagles also won the 4A Region III championship in 2009 while advancing to the state semifinals. Both times, Dawson faced Lake Travis, who has claimed the past four state championships and are making their bid for a state-record fifth straight state title this coming Saturday after Dawson fell to the Cavaliers 45-14 last Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Wells has posted an overall record of 36-15 over the four-year history of Dawson competing at the varsity level with two region championships and two trips to the state semifinals.
Dawson has seen almost two dozen players sign to play at the collegiate level and this year's squad should see several others continue their education and playing careers.
Wells is a native of La Marque and is married to wife, Angela, who is an R.N. They have two children, Tucker, age 14, and Spencer, age 12.
Wells coached at La Marque for six years when the Cougars won three state championships. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin with a B.S. degree. Wells was named 4A “Coach of the Year” by the Houston Texans 2009 after seeing the Eagles advance to the 4A Division I state semifinals. Wells enjoys his family as well as playing golf. He is also instrumental in raising money for the support of children with Down Syndrome.
