PEARLAND — It shouldn't have come as a surprise that Dawson senior quarterback Darian Lazard was named as the District 24-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player and All-District first-team quarterback after leading the second-year varsity Eagles to a first-ever Class 4A Region III Division I championship and the 4A Division I state semifinals.
The Utah commit set 17 school offensive records during his two-year tenure at the varsity level including the career passing record (225-of-421 for 3,327 yards - 25 TDs - 12 INTs) and career rushing leader (381 carries for 2,211 yards and 31 TDs). Lazard finished with a school record 5,538 total yards and 56 touchdowns.
Lazard was the second leading passer in the league with 2,297 yards and 17 touchdowns while stepping off 1,306 rushing yards on 254 totes and another 19 TDs. That gave him a league-leading 3,327 total yards and 31 TDs.
“First of all, I just want to say that I am so proud of these kids,” Dawson head coach Eric Wells said. “For everything that they accomplished this year, you just have to be proud of their accomplishments.”
Joining Lazard on the first-team offense was offensive linemen senior Derrick Axtell and junior Max Brown who anchored the offensive line to protect Lazard passing while opening up huge running lanes for all the ball carriers.
Junior wide receiver Marcus Vaughn also was named to the first-team offense after leading the league in receiving with 53 catches for 945 yards and nine TDs. Vaughn had 15 catches for 333 yards and three TDs as a sophomore giving him a two-year total of 1,278 yards and 12 scores. Vaughn is already on the radar of major college recruiters for his speed, incredible ability to catch the ball, and picking up additional yards after the catch. Needless to say, in Dawon's young history, Vaughn is setting the standard as the top receiver in school history to date.
Senior fullback Akeem Blackshire was also named to the first-team as he had 74 carries for 377 yards and 11 touchdowns while also being the lead blocker for Lazard and tailback Xavier Brown.
Blackshire was a repeat first-team pick from a year ago after he gained 508 yards on 78 carries for nine TDs. That gives him a two-year total of 152 carries for 885 yards and 20 TDs.
The Eagles had three players named to the All-District first-team on defense. They include senior defensive tackle David George, senior linebacker Lawrence Alanis, and senior defensive back Jordan Rose.
All three were instrumental in leading the defensive effort during the regular season and the deep run in the post-season.
Dawson had one player named to the second-team offense. Junior wide receiver Randall Weeks was the third leading receiver for the Eagles this year with 34 catches for 412 yards and two scores.
The Eagles had three players named to the second-team defensive unit. They included junior defensive end Robert Seals, sophomore outside linebacker Tre Oliver, and senior defensive back David Farris.
