HOUSTON — The Touchdown Club of Houston recently released the names of their pre-season All-Greater Houston offensive and defensive teams which features 31 of the top players in the Houston area.
Pearland's defensive end Sam Ukwuachu and Dawson's wide receiver Marcus Vaughn were both invited to the special dinner on Wednesday, August 11 at the JW Marriott which is located near the Galleria at 7:00 p.m.
Given annually since 1966, the Touchdowner of the Year will be awarded to Kenny Houston this year. The award is given for extraordinary contributions and outstanding achievements reflecting honor and sportsmanship to football over a lengthy period of time. Past winners include Darrell Royal, R.C. Slocum, Kyle Rote, Ken Hatfield, John David Crow, Sammy Baugh, Jerry LeVias, Thurman Thomas, Mack Brown, Jess Neely, Emory Bellard, Grant Teaff, Spike Dykes, Tom Landry, Harry Fouke, Bobby Lane, Jack Pardee and Bud Adams.
Ukwuachu plays with a lot of heart and grit that was influencial on both sides of the ball for Pearland last year.
The 6-4, 210 Ukwuachu was named the "Co-Defensive MVP" by the district coaches after his overall performance on defense -- though he was also an impact player on offense too.
The lanky, quick Ukwuachu, who has given a verbal commitment to Boise State, had one pass disruption, seven QB hurries, eight assisted tackles, 24 unassisted stops, four pass break ups, four sacks, two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. He also caught nine passes for 242 yards and two TDs.
Vaughn (6-2, 205, 4.4) had 53 catches for 945 yards and 9 TDs last season. He had 15 catches for 333 yards and three TDs as a sophomore giving him a two-year total of 1,278 yards and 12 scores. Vaughn is already on the radar of major college recruiters for his speed, incredible ability to catch the ball, and picking up additional yards after the catch. Needless to say, in Dawson's young history, Vaughn is setting the standard as the top receiver in school history to date.
Congratulations to both players and have a great senior year
