Friendswood drops heartbreaker to Clear Springs in OT


FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs led 44-39 entering the final quarter before allowing Clear Springs to close out the final eight minutes 20-15 to make the score 59-59 at the end of regulation sending the game into overtime.

As the game was coming to an end, the lead was also changing with Clear Springs making a frantic comeback.

With just 11.9 seconds left on the clock, Alex Dehoyos hit four free throws to add to two previous free shots to give the Mustangs a 59-56 cushion.

However, Clear Springs’ Christian Diaz answered by hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 59 and send it into overtime.

The Chargers jumped out to a 64-60 lead in OT, but Ty Shelby threw down a slam dunk, his second of the night, cutting a four-point Charger lead to 64-62 with less than a minute remaining in the extra period.

The Clear Springs defense stepped up against the Mustangs as Brick Fosnight scored on an easy layup off a steal by Christian Waller, putting the Chargers up 66-62.

The Chargers added two more points on a steal by Tyree Bearden to seal the game for Clear Springs, 68-62.

Leading the scoring for the Chargers was Christian Waller with 17 points followed by Warren Richardson with 16. Fosnight added nine points, Bearden scored eight points, and Gavin Roland scored five points.

Dehoyos led the scoring for the Mustangs with 14 points, followed by Shelby with 11 points, Daniel Martinez with seven, and James Hinchcliffe, Elijah Martinez, Chance Ayers and Andrew Alston with six apiece.

Friendswood falls to 2-1 in district while Clear Springs improves to 2-1.
