FRIENDSWOOD — When No. 3 La Marque invaded Friendwood's Walter Wilson Fieldhouse, most thought that the game between No. 11 Friendswood would be a much closer battle.
Unfortunately, the game proved why the Cougars are the higher ranked team as the Mustangs fell victim to a suffocating defense that limited the Friendswood offense to just over 30 percent shooting while forcing 18 turnovers.
The La Marque defense also controlled the game inside the paint registering 11 blocked shots.
The inconsistency on offense resulted in Friendswood being held scoreless in four minute spurts while being able to score only four field goals combined in the second and third period.
La Marque jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but the Mustangs battled back to even take a brief lead. But the Cougars continued their defensive prowess while the offense went on a 17-2 run during the second half of the second period to establish control of the game.
UT commit Julien Lewis of La Marque keyed the offensive surge as he fired in four 3-pointers and scored 12 of the 17 points in the second quarter run.
One of the keys objectives by La Marque coach Cedric Mason was shutting down Friendswood senior Byron Randle. The Sam Houston commit was held to just one field goal which came with under two minutes left in the game. Randle had free throw for three points. His season low of only two points in a game came against Dawson.
Mark Garza led the Mustangs with 12 pointgs while Jackson Griffon tossed in 10. Other scorers included Kevin Wilson (5), Dylan Darden (4), James Petri (2), Nolan Harvey (6), and Connor Neuman (2).
One of the big reason for La Marque's success this season is center Quevin Cams who had seven blocks, 16 rebounds, and six points.
Lewis finished with a game-high 20 points while also one of the main defensive stars in helping hold Friendswood to a season-low 43 points.
Earlier in the week - the Mustangs took out Brazosport 64-55 as Mark Garza and Byron Randall scored 16 points each to lead the offense while Brazosport had two players that scored all but two of their total points. Nolan Harvey added 13 while Jackson Griffon tossed in nine, Connor Neuman hit eight, and Peter Maetzold had two.
Dajon King scored 32 and D.J. Griggs tossed in 21 to lead the Exporters, but there wasn't any additional firepower to offset Friendswood's balanced scoring attack.
Friendswood won the first half battle 28-20 and then took the third quarter 19-16 for a 47-36 lead entering the final frame. Brazosport took the final eight minutes 19-17, but it wasn't enough to win the game.
Friendswood hosted Texas City on Tuesday (late) and then will travel to face Angleton on Friday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs continue on the road on Tuesday, January 26 to face Santa Fe at 7:30 p.m.
