FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs opened up District 24-4A action with a 2-1 win over Texas City which was a great way to celebrate "Teacher Appreciation Night."
The game became a battle in the pitcher circle as Friendswood's Kelly Smith and Texas City's Crystol Alainiz locked horns in a duel between two top pitchers.
Friendswood took an early 1-0 lead when Amber Mills led off with a single, moved to third on a single by Carrie Flores, and then scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Lauren Massar hit a bloop single that scored another run giving the Lady Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.
Smith took control of the game allowing only two hits while fanning 14 while giving up an unearned run.
