FRIENDSWOOD — It came as no surprise that the Friendswood boys and girls soccer teams advanced to the area round of the playoffs. Both teams were expected to take care of their first round opponents and they did in dominating fashion.
In a rare occasion - both teams played on the same night on the same field, As husband and wife and head coaches, Stephen and Laura Peter, rarely get to see one another's team play during the regular season.
Stephen coaches the boys and Laura the girls -- and both have been very successful over the years.
“We don’t get to see each other play very often because we’re usually playing on the same nights at different sites,” Laura said. “A lot of the players are friends with each other and there is a lot of camaraderie, so at least for one night we got to cheer each other on.”
While the boys have never won a regional championship, but make deep runs in the post-season -- the girls are the four-time defending 4A Region III champion and looking for their fifth crown that will send them to their fifth straight state soccer tournament.
The only thing missing from Laura's resume is a state championship - though the Lady Mustangs did win a state title in 2001 after making the state tournament three straight years (1999-2001) under another head coach.
The Lady Mustangs took the field at Abshier Stadium in Deer Park first and posted an overwhelming 9-0 victory over the Crosby Lady Cougars.
"It's nice to start the playoffs that way," Laura Peter said. "I felt like we came out strong."
It did take the Lady 'Stangs a few minutes to get on the scoreboard, but once they did, the goals came quickly.
Annalisa Hall, who will play soccer at Oklahoma next season, scored four tiems and added an assist to spark Friendswood to the lopsided win. Makenzie Newkirk, Tess Horbach, and Hannah Perry all had goals and one assist.
Caitlin Kaltenbaugh and Hannah Sutherland also scored goals while Mia Castillo and Meghan Vickery had one assist each. Sarah Martin also had an assist to make the win a total team effort.
The Friendswood boys followed in the nightcap with a 9-0 pounding over Goose Creek Memorial.
Seniors Jeremy Hume and Byron Randle combined for five goals before the break with Randle picking up the hat trick. Brian Mulcahey had two goals and two assists while Corbin Kaspar added a score and three assists. Justin Strickland and Chris Johnson also got in the scoring column while Jonse Montalvo had two assists with Kyle Caton getting one assist.
“It was good for both teams to get going early offensively,” Stephen said. “This is the playoffs and any time you get the opportunity to get a good shot, it helps if you can take advantage of it."
Both teams played on Tuesday night (late) with the girls facing Sharpstown and the boys playing Houston Lee. Check at: www.reporternewssports.com for the results on Wednesday.
