FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs took care of business as usual with a 9-0 rout of Houston Sharpstown to keep their hopes alive to win their fifth straight Class 4A Region III title and to return back to the state soccer tournament for a record fifth consecutive year to claim a state championship.
Unfortunately, the Friendswood boys saw their playoff run come to an end against Houston Lee 2-0, which is the same team that knocked them out 1-0 a year ago.
Friendswood got only three shots on goal against a suffocating Lee defense.
"They're a good team," head coach Stephen Peter said. "They make you make quick decisions with pressure."
As for the girls - Annalisa Hall continues to be the offensive charge that the Lady Mustangs need as she scored at the 29 minute mark that led to three goals in four minutes.
“It kind of took us awhile to get going because we were working on some things,” Lady Mustangs coach Laura Peter said. “But once we got going, it all clicked.”
Friendswood got two goals from Hall while Meghan Vickery, Tess Horbach, Kara Wheeler, Bri Sherer, Caitlin Kaltenbaugh, and Mia Castillo all got in on the scoring column.
Sarah Martin also scored while adding an assist. Makenzie Newkirk had an assist with Jenny Blackman adding in two assists.
Friendswood goalkeeper registered her 16th straight shutout though the Friendswood defense never allowed Sharpstown to get a shot on goal.
The Lady 'Stangs advanced to face district rival Santa Fe.
Friendswood 3 - Santa Fe 0
The streak against Santa Fe continues as the Friendswood Lady Mustangs have never lost to the Lady Indians. With dominating wins during district, Friendswood knocked out Santa Fe 3-0 to advance to the 4A Region III quarterfinals.
Caitlin Kaltenbaugh got things started for Friendswood as the freshman midfielder dribbled her way through the Santa Fe defenders to give the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 lead with 8:02 left in the first half. This is the third straight year that Friendswood has sent the Lady Indians home in the playoffs.
Annalisa Hall added a goal two minutes later on an assist from Kara Wheeler who found Hall about 10 feet from the goal. Hall maneuvered the ball for the shot to give Friendswood a 2-0 advantage at the half.
Meghan Vickery scored Friendswood's final goal on an assist from Tess Horbach.
While Santa Fe played superb defense, so did Friendswood who allowed the Lady Indians only three shots on goal which all came in the second half. The Lady Mustangs had 20 shots on goal but were stopped by a great effort by Santa Fe's goalkeeper Tyler Steinbach.
