FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood pitcher Andrew Bossert tossed seven strong innings while Kyle Singleton had two hits and drove in three runs including a two-run blast in the third inning to give the No. 6 area-ranked Mustangs a crucial 9-4 win over No. 3 area-ranked Angleton while moving into the top spot of the district standings with a 6-1 mark.
Brandon Hollier also had a big night at the plate as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI double while scoring two runs. Jordan Gibbs added two RBI's including a double in the seventh to extend the lead. Tyler Sullivan also had two hits and an RBI and Ethan Erenwert added an RBI in a team effort win.
The victory over Angleton completed a successful week for head coach Charlie Taylor and his diamondmen who also knocked off district favorite Texas City 4-3 in 10 innings a few days prior to facing the Wildcats.
Angleton scored a run in the bottom of the first and then Friendswood answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second and three more in the top of the third for a 5-1 lead.
The Wildcats kept it close with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-3 but a three-run seventh by Friendswood blew the game open for the 9-4 victory.
Of course - it didn't hurt Friendswood's effort as Angleton committed four errors in the second through fourth frames, but that is the nature of the beast when two high ranking teams face one another. It sometimes comes down to who will make the least number of errors and which team will take advantage of those miscues.
The Mustangs closed out the game in the seventh with four straight hits and three runs to put the game out of reach.
Friendswood 4 - Texas City 3
Brandon Hollier had a clutch game against Texas City to help lead the Mustangs to a 4-3 win that kept Friendswood at the top of the league leader board.
Hollier, who had recent struggles hitting, broke out of his slump going 3-for-4 including the game-tying RBI in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. He also got a key hit in the 10th inning when the Mustangs won the game on a bases-loaded error.
With the game on the line in the seventh, Hollier smashed a hot grounder past the second baseman which tied up the game.
With neither team being able to score for the next two innings, Michael Goodwin, Hollier, and Matt Kennemer had three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Johnathan Johnson hit a slow roller to the left side which allowed Goodwin to score the game-winner.
"We had a lot of balls being thrown," head coach Charlie Taylor said. "Those guys came in and picked us up though and kept us in the game."
