FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs beat Brazosport and La Marque last week to finish in fourth place in the District 24-4A standings which qualifies them for the post-season.
Senior pitcher Kelly Smith has had an outstanding season capped off by breaking the team strikeout record previously held by Kirstie Curry (2005-08). The record was broken two weeks ago when Friendswood blanked Pearland Dawson 5-0. Smith struck out 16 Lady Eagles to pocket the record set at 586.
Smith now has over 600 strikeouts and counting after picking up wins against Brazosport and La Marque.
Against Brazosport, the Lady Mustangs scored two runs in the fourth inning when Amber Mills stroked a double followed by a trio of singles by Lauren Massar, Lindsey Davis, and Rylie Kohls.
Friendswood added two more runs in the seventh inning when Massar singled and Davis blasted a two-run homer to give the Lady 'Stangs the 4-1 win.
Friendswood had a strong offensive showing with 12 hits led by Kohls who had three hits while Mills, Davis, and Massar pounded out a pair of hits each. Kelsey Eubanks, Caitlyn Garivey, and Kelsi Acosta had one hit each. Davis had three RBIs and Kohls added one RBI.
Smith got the win with 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work allowing one unearned run.
Friendswood 12 - La Marque 2
The Lady Mustangs closed out the regular district season with a 12-2 thrashing against La Marque to give Friendswood a 20-11-1 overall record and 9-5 in district.
Smith pitched four innings to pickup the win with 10 strikeouts. Lauren Massar pitched two innings allowing one hit and fanning three batters.
Leading 4-0 entering the fifth frame, Friendswood broke the game open with six runs for a 10-0 advantage before adding a pair of runs in the sixth inning to close out the game 12-2.
Playoff Schedule
Friendswood will face Bay City in a best-of-three series. The first game will be at Bay City on Friday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. The second game will be at Pearland Dawson HS on Saturday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. The third game (if necessary) will be at Dawson 30 minutes after game two.
