FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood and Santa Fe were scheduled to play a best-of-three series in the Class 4A Region III quarterfinals, but the rain over the weekend changed all of that forcing the two district rivals to a one-game showdown in a one and done scenario.
The Lady Mustangs scored both of their runs in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead, but the Lady Indians answered with a big inning in the bottom of the third resulting in five runs.
Friendswood's runs came on a bases-loaded single by freshman Rylie Kohls for one run and Carrie Flores scored on a throwing error.
Santa Fe added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to post the 8-2 win.
Kelly Smith took the loss for the Lady Mustangs. The Southern Mississippi signee battled back spasms during the game and had to leave the pitching circle in great pain in the third inning.
"It's hard, Friendswood head coach Kevin Parr said. "Kelly really wanted to stay in; she's such a battler. She's had such a great season, a great career, you just wish she could have had a better ending. I know she would have liked to go out on a bang and full strength."
Smith finished her career as the all-time strikeout leader for the Lady Mustangs.
Lauren Massar took over for Smith and allowed only one earned run and two hits over 3 2/3 innings.
