FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs (2-1) looked like a much different team than the one who lost 28-18 to Brazoswood the previous week.
Friendswood head coach Steve Van Meter was very pleased with what he saw as the Mustangs ripped the Nederland Bulldogs 42-7 in their season home opener before a packed out crowd at Henry Winston Stadium.
Offensively, the Mustangs gained 424 total yards and built a 42-0 lead before Nederland finally scored against the reserves with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.
"We accumulated 424 yards of offense and allowed -minus 18 yards rushing and 88 yards passing," Van Meter said. "We dominated the game in all phases. Nederland is not on its game at this time. They are suffering at the QB position after losing their two year starter in the first game and their backup was sick with the flu. Coach Newman who is one of the most respected coaches in the state will find a way to get the Bulldogs back in the hunt."
Friendswood running back Andrew Cole had his best game of the year. He ran with power and maximized his runs with a north / south attitude. Cole carried 17 times for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Peter Maetzold had a quality night completing 13-of-22 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Maetzold completed passes to 10 different receivers.
Cole scored on runs of 31 and 4 yards while grabbing a touchdown pass covering 17 yards. Jonathan Johnson was on the receiving end of a 15-yard scoring toss from Maetzold and Sam Giamfortone added a 15-yard scoring dash. Austin Ratcliff caught a 14-yard scoring strike from Maetzold. Zach Hardy booted six extra points.
The Mustangs had their best defensive game of the young season as they limited the Bulldogs to five first downs and 70 total yards including -minus 18 rushing.
"Hunter Ratcliff, Travis Manning and Sam Giamfortone played well up front," Van Meter pointed out. "Beau Barnes, Tanner Chidester and Brant Liufau were solid. I felt like Will Fitzpatrick played his best game to date. Robert Smith, Hunter Mcafee and Matt Kennemer played well in the secondary."
Friendswood travels to Texas City on Friday, September 25 to open up District 24-4A action at 7:00 p.m.
