FRIENDSWOOD — The No. 1 area-ranked Angleton Wildcats lived up to all the pre-game hype as they knocked off No. 3 area-ranked Friendswood 48-33.
Head coach Steve Van Meter admitted that Angleton was as fast as advertised, was very physical on their offensive line, and was solid on defense.
On the other hand, the veteran coach was proud of the effort by his players for playing hard the entire game and improving their effort on offense from the previous week.
"There are time that you get on the same field against another team and they just have more speed and athleticism,"
Van Meter said. "Angleton has a very special team with some outstanding athletes and it is no disgrace to lose to a team like that -- as long as you know your own team gave it their best effort -- and our kids did exactly that and came up short."
The game began with both teams trading scoring punches as Angleton scored with 4:06 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
It took only 17 seconds for Friendswood to answer as Brant Liufau broke through the Angleton defense for a spectacular 81-yard scoring jaunt. Zach Hardy added the extra point to tie up the game 7-7.
The Wildcats scored again with 11:53 left in the second quarter to grab a 14-0 lead.
Friendswood’s Matt Kennemer came right back and returned the kickoff 59 yards to set up the ’Stangs at the Angleton 40. Kennemer had quite a night, finishing with 281 yards in kickoff returns against the Wildcats.
The Mustangs did score after Kennemer’s return on a 12-yard run by Jonathan Johnson, but the extra point was no good, keeping Angleton ahead 14-13.
Angleton scored two more times before the end of the first half while the Mustangs added a score on a 33-yard pass from Peter Maetzold to Johnson. Once again the extra point failed leaving the 'Stangs trailing 28-19 at intermission.
The Wildcats increased their lead in the third quarter to 34-19, but the Mustangs came back as Maetzold tossed another scoring pass to Keith Canada covering 26 yards. Hardy booted the extra point to cut the lead to 34-26.
That would be as close as Friendswood would get as the Wildcats got a 58-yard scoring run from Henry Josey and a 12 yard run by QB Quandre Diggs to build a 48-26 lead.
Johnson scored with 15 seconds left in the game on a three-yard pass from Maetzold to make the final score 48-33.
Angleton allowed just two first downs to Friendswood in the second half and only 48 total offensive yards — with only two scores and the last one coming in the final minute of play.
Friendswood finished with 300 total yardsas Maetzold hit 15-of-29 passing for 186 yards and three TDs. Luifau led the rushing attack with eight carries for 96 yards and one score. Johnson had seven grabs for 100 yards and two TDs.
The Mustangs were playing without All-District running back Andrew Cole who has a bruised shoulder.
Friendswood drops to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Mustangs will face the big surprise of the district when Santa Fe comes to Henry Winston Stadium for homecoming festivities on Friday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
The Indians have finished in the district cellar the last three years with an 0-21 mark, but Santa Fe is currently ranked No. 8 in the Houston area with a perfect 5-0 mark. They snapped their three-year district losing streak with wins over Brazosport (10-7) and a come-from-behind win over Texas City (20-16) last week.
