FREEPORT — Friendswood was on the brink of not making the post-season just a few weeks ago after falling to Angleton in an offensive shootout and then missing a 26-yard field goal with five seconds left to go in the game against Santa Fe after the Indians made a two-point conversion to go ahead 29-28 with 35 seconds left in the final period.
"It was no secret that we almost eliminated ourselves after the first two district games," head coach Steve Van Meter said. "But this group of kids sucked it up and were determined that they weren't going to go down without a fight. And now we have stepped up to extend our season."
The Mustangs are the defending Class 4A Region III champions and advanced to the 4A Division I state semifinals last season before falling to eventual two-time state champion Lake Travis -- who is currently ranked No. 1 in the state.
"You never know how far you can go in the playoffs unless you don't make the playoffs," Van Meter said. "That's the reason why we play the game. On any given night - a team can arise out of obscurity and knock off another team with greater talent. It all starts with heart and this year's team has shown a lot of heart."
Friendswood traveled to Freeport to face Brazosport and got the playoff-clinching win they needed with a 38-14 pounding.
There really was never any doubt in the game as Friendswood jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a Peter Maetzold scoring pass to Chris O'Bryan and a 4-yard scoring run by Andrew Cole with 7:37 left in the opening period.
Brazosport battled back to score with 1:14 left in the second period to cut the lead to 14-7.
Since it was close to Halloween - Van Meter reached into his bag of tricks for Friendswood's next touchdown.
Maetzold pitched the ball to Jonathan Johnson on a sweep. But Johnson stopped and threw back to Maetzold down the sideline to complete a 23-yard scoring pass for a with only 14 seconds left before intermission giving the 'Stangs a 21-7 halftime lead.
Cole scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter, Zach Hardy added a 30-yard field goal, and Johnson closed out the scoring with 11:55 left in the final period to give the Mustangs a comfortable 38-7 lead.
Brazosport got one more touchdown to close out the game 38-14.
Maetzold leads the district in passing with 1,803 yards passing and 17 TDs with seven interceptions.
Against Brazosport, the junior signal-caller hit 16-of-25 passing for 232 yards and one score. Andrew Cole had nine carries for 62 yards and two TDs and four catches for 99 yards. O'Bryan had four grabs for 66 yards and one score.
Friendswood will host La Marque in the season finale. The Cougars are 4-5 overall and 2-4 in district and are still mathematically playoff eligible, but they must beat the Mustangs or their season is over.
Friendswood beat the Cougars 69-48 last year in La Marque which was the most points ever scored on a Cougar defense. La Marque lost last week to Manvel 20-12.
The game begins at 7:00 p.m. at Henry Winston Stadium.
