Mustangs stampede past Terry to keep playoff hopes alive

FRIENDSWOOD — With their backs against the wall, the Friendswood Mustangs were in a must-win District 10-5A-I conflict with the Terry Rangers.

A loss to Terry would mean the season would be over when they face Angleton in the final game of the 2018 season. But hope is still alive as the Mustangs took charge for a 42-14 win and now they are in a must-win situation when they travel to Wildcat Stadium to face Angleton (8-1, 5-1) on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m.

There is no scenario for the Mustangs left except to beat Angleton. A loss means the season is over. It is as simple as that.

The Mustangs are tied with Hightower at 3-3 and need for Foster (5-4, 4-2) to beat the Hurricanes.

Friendswood opened up the first half with 28 unanswered points which put them on the right path to stay in the playoff hunt.

The first Friendswood score cam on their opening drive of the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Luke Grden scored on a 2-yard run to cap off an 8-play, 57-yard drive for a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 14-0 when running back Luke Revere scored on a 34-yard dash to the end zone at the 10:01 mark of the second period.

After the Friendswood defense stopped Terry on downs, Grden went to work through the airways as he completed five straight passes with the final pass covering 36-yards to Austin Alvarez for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead with 3:06 left before halftime.

But the Mustangs were finished as Grden and Alvarez hooked up again before intermission covering 12 yards for a 28-0 advantage.

With 3:33 left in the third quarter, Friendswood found the pay station once again as sophomore running back Noah Palitz scored on a 10-yard run to a 35-0 lead.

The final score of the game for Friendswood came when junior Christian Lee ran a jet sweep covering 27 yards to give the Mustangs a commanding 42-0 lead.

Terry scored a couple of times in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 42-14, but it was too little, too late as the Mustangs got the much needed victory.

Grden was 10-of-16 passing for 182 yards and two TDs.

Revere had 12 carries for 97 yards and one score while Palitz had 13 totes for 53 yards and a TD.

Alvarez had four catches for 69 yards and two scores while Palitz had two grabs for 43 yards.

Friendswood fans need to make the trip to Angleton support the Mustangs in their effort to upset Angleton and continue their season.
