FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood grad Chelsea Edwards might have played her last college basketball game, but the UT-Dallas senior continues to rack up awards.
Edwards was named the American Southwest Conference East Division "Defensive Player of the Year." She also was named to the ASC All-Conference team and to the ASC All-East Division team. It was the first time in Edwards’ four-year career to get an All-Conference nod.
Edwards also is a finalist for the 13th annual Josten’s Trophy, given to the Division III "National Player of the Year." Criteria for the trophy include athletic accomplishments, academic achievement and community service.
She finished as the Comets' all-time leader in points, assists, and steals. She averaged 11.8 points per game and was second in the league in steals (3.1) and fourth in assists (4.0) in helping to leading UTD to a 19-7 overall record and national ranking in 2009-10.
Edwards received her B.S. degree in Business Administration from UTD in just three years and is currently pursuing her Master's degree. She has been active in charity work for the homeless in her hometown of Friendswood.
The Josten's Trophy, which was created by the Rotary Club of Salem, VA., will be presented on Thursday, March 18 at the Salem Civic Center in conjunction with the Men's Division III Championship being hosted in Salem, VA. on March 19-20.
