FRIENDSWOOD — Last year, Friendswood faced Houston Davis and it took eight innings for the Mustangs to get past the Panthers.
This year, head coach Charlie Taylor and his diamondmen didn't give Davis a chance as the Mustangs bombed the Panthers 12-0 in the first game of their best-of-three series.
The game ended in five innings with the 10-run mercy rule while Jordan Gibbs and Tayler Sullivan combined for a no-hitter on the mound.
Friendswood scored four runs in the bottom of the first as Gibbs, Connor Neuman, and Sullivan all had RBI singles.
The 'Stangs built an 8-0 lead at the end of three innings.
"We wanted to attack," Taylor said. "We weren't going to play around this year."
Gibbs had a strong pitching performance over his three innings as he retired all nine batters while striking out five in a perfect outing.
Taylor turned to Sullivan to go the final two frames to give him some reps.
Friendswood 12 - Davis 0
The second playoff game was almost a repeat of the first game as Friendswood blasted the Davis Panthers 12-0 after only two innings before rain and lightening halted play.
Michael Speck provided the fireworks as he blasted a grand slam over the left field fence at Manvel HS.
Brandon Hollier, Matt Kennemer, Tyler Sullivan, and Connor Neumann each scored twice. Jordan Gibbs drove in two runs while Kennemer also had an RBI.
The game was to resume on Saturday, but more rain caused a delay and the coaches mutually agreed to end the series based on the lopsided lead. Friendswood advances to the Class 4A Region III quarterfinals.
