ALVIN — Manvel and Columbia battled through the first quarter without either team giving up a score at Memorial Stadium in Alvin.
With 1:47 left in the second quarter - Manvel finally got on the scoreboard on a one-yard scoring pass from quarterback Travaughn Colwell to Saqwan Edwards. Jimmy Wells added the extra point to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead at intermission.
Trevion Alexander set up the score when he got loose on a 42-yard jaunt.
The Mavs scored again in the third quarter on a two-yard QB sneak by Colwell. Once again - the touchdown was set up a big play. This time it was a 57-yard pass from Colwell to Edwards and a 27-yard run by Alexander.
Columbia had some fight still left in them despite trailing 14-0 late in the fourth quarter.
Roughneck quarterback Daymond Lewis ripped off a 28-yard run to the Maverick one-yard line. Sean Flannel scored on the next play with 3:09 left in the contest. Treylen Johnican booted the extra point to cut the lead to 14-7.
An onside kick was expected by everyone in the stadium and it appeared that Columbia recovered the ball, but the officials ruled that a Columbia player touched the ball before it had traveled the mandetory 10 yards.
Manvel got possession of the ball and sealed the win when Xavier Reed zipped past the Columbia defense for a 40-yard scoring jaunt. The extra point found the mark giving Manvel the 21-7 win to improve their season record to 2-1.
It was really a wonder that the game remained as close as it did as Columbia lost four fumbles in the first half and then saw three passes intercepted in the second half.
"We couldn't buy a break and we didn't take are of the ball," Columbia head coach Leland Surovik said. "We fumbled the ball, drove it down the field and then we'd fumble again. And then we'd fumble again and throw an interception. It was unbelievable."
The Roughnecks still finished the game with 372 yards of offense despite the miscues, but the Columbia defense eventually gave in to the Mavs because they were on the field for so long.
The Mavs finished with 358 total yards as Colwell was 11-of-20 passing for 125 yards and one score. Colwell also gained 55 yards on the ground on 11 carries.
Alexander had 84 yards rushing on 10 carries while Reed added 63 yards on four totes. Edwards had six catches for 90 yards and a TD. Reed had four grabs for 44 yards.
The Mavericks will be open this Friday giving them an extra week to prepare for the District 24-4A opener against Pearland Dawson at The Rig at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25.
