ALVIN — Manvel and Brazosport both lost close games to open District 24-4A action.
Season surprise Santa Fe, who had a three-year district losing streak entering the 2009 football campaign, knocked off Brazosport 10-7 in their district opener.
Manvel lost a hard-fought 21-20 game to Pearland Dawson to open district play.
With both teams believing they would be in contention to make the playoffs this year -- it was important for the Mavs to show up and make a statement with a win.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks - it was the Exporters who came out armed and ready to pick up their first district win and get back into the playoff hunt.
Mistakes and turnovers proved to be the downfall for the Mavs as Brazosport scored 27 points off the miscues including three interceptions.
“We really did not play at all tonight,” Manvel head coach Kirk Martin said. “That’s the worst I’ve seen us play, and that’s my fault as a head coach. I didn’t have them ready to play. That’s my fault, 100 percent. But it won’t be my fault again.
“They didn’t show up tonight in any phase of the game — offense, defense or the kicking game.”
Brazosport scored 17 points in the first half for a 17-0 lead. It only got worse in the second half as the Exporters added 28 more points in the second half with the final score coming with 9:37 in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by Anthony Quiller to make the score a lopsided 45-0.
The only bright spots for the Mavs came when Saqwan Edwards scored on a 70-yard pass from Taveo Colwell and then Colwell scored on a 16-yard run with 3:12 left in the game to make the final score 45-12.
Brazosport finished wiht 357 total yards while the Mavs were held to 191 including only 27 yards rushing on 10 carries.
QB Dexter Foreman was only 8-of-17 passing for 37 yards while Colwell was 3-of-4 for 75 yards and one score.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Mavericks as they will travel to Texas City on Friday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. to face the Stingarees who are coming off a 20-16 loss to undefeated Santa Fe.
Manvel is now 2-3 overall and 0-2 in district. Another loss will just about end all playoff hopes as the Mavs still must face Santa Fe, Friendswood, La Marque, and Angleton.
