TEXAS CITY — The Manvel Mavericks entered the season with confidence that they would be in contention for the playoffs this year. With only four district games remaining in the 2009 season - the Mavs (2-3, 0-3) find themselves behind the 8-ball with an 0-3 league record with Santa Fe (3-0) , Friendswood (1-2), La Marque(1-2), and Angleton (3-0) left on their schedule.
Manvel will need to run the table to make the post-season and from all probability -- it doesn't look that is going to happen as one more loss will put them out of the running for sure.
Manvel and Texas City battled to a 0-0 score in the opening period, but Texas City driving to the Manvel 25, the Stingarees fumbled the ball and Chris Colwell came up with the loose ball and rambled 75 yards with the fumble recovery for the score. Jimmy Wells added the extra point for a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
It took only 17 seconds for Texas City to even the score at 7-7 as Will Evans broke through the Manvel defense on the first play following the kickoff for a 66-yard scoring jaunt with 11:29 left in the second period. Travis Michalak added the extra point.
Texas City forced Manvel to punt after three plays. It took only 3:01 for the Stings to find the end zone again as Ryan Harper bulled his way for a 1-yard score. The extra point was good for a 14-7 lead with 8:28 left in the second period.
The Stings added a 23-yard field goal by Michalak with 3:29 left before intermission giving Texas City 17 unanswered points and a 17-7 advantage.
Texas City added another field goal covering 31 yards with 6:21 left in the third quarter to up the lead to 20-7.
But that would be the final points for the Stings as Manvel attempted to make a come back in the game.
With only 8 seconds left in the third quarter - Wells tacked on a 27-yard field goal to close the game to 20-10.
Manvel added another score with 5:29 left in the game on a 3-yard scoring run by Trevion Alexander. The extra point missed the mark leaving the Mavs trailing 20-16.
The Mavs had one final run to pull out a late win, but Texas City's Kaleb Apffel sealed the victory with an interception late in the fourth quarter.
Alexander led the Mavs on offense with 21 carries for 138 yards and one score. Saqwan Edwards had four catches for 60 yards. Dexter Foreman was 5-of-11 passing for only 21 yards while Travaughn Colwell was 3-of-10 for 30 yards.
Manvel will host undefeated Santa Fe for homecoming on Friday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Alvin Memorial Stadium.
The Indians are the surprise team in the district after entering the season with three winless seasons in league play. Santa Fe is coming off a shocking 29-28 win at Friendswood and enter the game with a perfect 6-0 mark and ranked No. 3 in the Houston area among 4A schools -- the highest ranking for Santa Fe in school history.
