LA MARQUE — Early district losses this season placed Manvel in the same position they were last year in their initial season of varsity competition in District 24-4A. The Mavs have to beat No. 5 state-ranked and defending league champion Angleton to make the playoffs and even then they have to have some help.
Angleton (6-0), Friendswood (4-2), and upstart Pearland Dawson (4-2) have already secured their place in the post-season.
Despite all the other scenarios for Santa Fe (3-3), La Marque (2-4), Texas City (2-4), and Manvel (2-4) in the final games of the regular season - the Mavs must beat the Wildcats. And that is going to be a tall order to do considering that most have Angleton winning the Region III crown and making a run to the state title game.
But stranger things have happened.
For the second straight year - Manvel faced a young La Marque team and came away with the win making them 2-0 against the Cougars in the young history of these two teams.
Manvel opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal by Jimmy Wells with 5:48 left in the opening period.
A La Marque turnover allowed the Mavs to cash in for a 14-yard scoring run by Xavier Reed. Wells added the extra point giving Manvel an early 10-0 first quarter lead.
With a Manvel drive stalling at the La Marque goal line - Wells booted an 18-yard field goal with 1:51 left before intermission for a 13-0 advantage.
But as every opponent knows - La Marque has the speed to strike quickly and the Cougars did with no time showing on the first half clock when Mike Gilmore caught a pass from quarterback Emanuel Williams. The extra point missed leaving the Mavs in front 13-6 at halftime.
Neither team was able to put any more points on the board in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter - Gilmore got behind the Maveriks' secondary for a 66-yard scoring bomb. The extra point missed again leaving the Mavs clinging to a 13-12 lead.
But the Mavericks came back and scored on a 2-yard run by Treveon Reed with 6:38 left in the game. Wells booted the extra point to make the score 20-12.
The Manvel defense took over from there to secure the win.
Manvel is now 4-5 overall and 2-4 in district.
The Mavs will host Angleton on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Alvin Memorial Stadium.
