MANVEL — The football season may be over, but the momentum of the Manvel football team has carried over to the boys and girls basketball programs as both are ranked No. 9 among 4A teams by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
"The football team's success is rubbing off on our players," Manvel head coach Greg Devers said. "They saw what the football team did, and it's given them even more incentive and drive to do weel, and we're also motivated by our girls basketball team and the outstanding program they have under coach Fleceia Comeaux, and we're just trying to keep up."
The Manvel boys have started the season with a 13-3 overall mark and a 3-0 start in district action. Heading into the holiday break, Manvel had a 10-game winning streak while winning 12-of-13 before the Alvin Lions Club Classic.
Manvel opens up the 2012 season with a district game at Friendswood on Wednesday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The Mavs beat Ball High 69-56, Clear Falls 83-38, and Santa Fe 81-44 for their 3-0 district start.
The Mavs are looking to make the basketball playoffs for the first time in school history. This is the fifth varsity season for the Mavs and they are favored, not only to make the post-season this year, but to challenge for the District 24-4A crown.
"On paper, it's us and Dawson 1-2 in district, unless something happens," Devers said.
Returning starters for Manvel include Terry Allen (6-7 senior point guard), Jonovan Williams (5-10 senior guard), Cameron Wright (6-3 senior guard), and lettermen D.J. Cunning (6-3 senior guard), Jalen Hatch (5-9 senior guard), and Traylin Farris (6-7 junior post).
Other players that will make an impact this season include Evan Webster (6-8 junior), Ahamad Huff (5-10 sophomore), Demetrius Buckner (5-11 senior), and Robert Parmley (5-10 senior).
Some football players will bring their mojo to the team including quarterback Julian Walker (6-0 senior), Jarred Ambers (6-1 junior), and Carlos Thompson (5-11 junior).
Xavier Alvarado (6-4 senior) is out for now with a broken leg.
"This is the best depth we've had since I've been at Manvel," Devers said.
Allen leads the Mavs in scoring with 25 points per game while Williams is scoring at 12 points per clip and Wright is at 10 points per game.
Allen has committed to continue his basketball career for the University of Richland in Virginia.
