PEARLAND — The team standings after the first round of District 22-5A action show the Pearland Oilers (6-2) in third place - two games back of frontrunner Deer Park (8-0) and one game back of La Porte (7-1).
However - the Oilers are only four points from being in first place as they lost to Deer Park 57-55 and La Porte 35-33. Both losses came on the final shot of the game.
"We shouldn't have lost either of those games," head coach Steve Buckelew said. "We were eight points ahead with less than two minutes to go against Deer Park and we self-destructed."
The Oilers closed out the first round with a 49-39 win over Dobie to secure sole possession of third place.
Kevin Williams and Shai Fields paced the Pearland offense in the opening quarter with six and five points respectively giving the Oilers a 15-12 lead.

The third quarter saw both teams run cold on offense as the Oilers nipped the Horns 6-4 for a 36-27 advantage entering the final period.

Williams led the way with 15 points while Fields had 12 points. Lanier tossed in nine points.
