Friendswood secures playoff spot
Friendswood 55 - Manvel 38
Jackson Griffon hit three 3-pointers in the final minutes of the second quarter to give the Mustangs a 26-22 lead at halftime after Manvel led for most of the first half. Griffon went on to score 15 points to lead Friendswood past the Mavericks 55-38 while getting help from Mark Garza (12 points - 8 rebounds) and Nolan Harvey (11 points - 2 steals). The win gave the 'Stangs a spot in the post-season while still trailing La Marque by one game for a share of the District 24-4A title.
Friendswood 57 - Brazosport 33
Friendswood (23-5, 10-1) ran roughshod over Brazosport 57-33 to remain in contention for a share of the league title. Nolan Harvey and Kevin Wilson both scored 11 points while Mark Garza added 10 in the rout over the Exporters (11-19, 2-9).
Friendswood hosted La Marque on Tuesday (late) to determine the district championship. The Mustangs will travel to Texas City on Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. and then will host Angleton on Tuesday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. The fnal two games of the season have playoff ramifications for Texas City and Angleton who are fighting for the third and fourth places in the league race. La Marque and Friendswood will both advance to the post-season.
Dawson still in playoff race
Dawson head coach Mark Barre challenged his roundballers to finish 4-3 in the second round believing they would be able to grab the fourth and final playoff spot for the 2009-10 basketball season.
At the current rate, the Eagles are 2-2 in the second round and are still mathmatically in the hunt. With three games remaining, Barre knows that his hardcourt warriors have their work cut out for them. They still have Santa Fe (Tuesday, late), Manvel at home on Friday, February 12 and league-leading La Marque on Tuesday, February 16 at La Marque.
The Eagles beat Santa Fe and Manvel in the first round. Angleton and Manvel are still in the race for the fourth spot, but they have a much tougher schedule down the stretch against the top three teams.
Dawson 75 - Brazosport 51
Craig Grigsby fired in 20 points while Darian Lazard (13 Points) and Jonathon Lewis (12 points) added offensive support as the Eagles slammed Brazosport 75-51 to keep their playoff dreams alive.
Dawson led 40-24 at halftime and then cruised in the second half for the 24-point margin of victory.
Texas City 62 - Dawson 58
The Dawson Eagles have played the top three district teams as close as they can get without getting the win. Head coach Mark Barre saw is team fall to La Marque by two points on the last shot of the game. Dawson lost to Friendswood 46-44 in overtime on a last-shot tip in.
The Eagles traveled to Texas City and came up short 62-58. The two teams were tied 47-47 entering the final eight minutes, but the Stingarees took the final frame 15-11 to pull out the late win.
Anthony Miles tossed in 17 for Dawson while Jordan Rose added 12.
Oilers stay in post-season hunt
Pearland 60 - Sam Rayburn 51
The Pearland Oilers maintained their third place status in the District 22-5A race with a 60-51 win over Sam Rayburn.
Kevin Williams got game-high honors with 18 points for the Oilers while Shai Fields had 17 points and Steven Hodge added 10.
The win improves the Oilers to 19-15 overall and 7-3 for the season.
La Porte 41 - Pearland 30
It is hard to beat a team when you score only four points in a quarter. You score only five points in a quarter and the end result will be a loss. The Oilers scored only four points in the first eight minutes of play and closed out the final eight minutes with five points giving the La Porte Bulldogs, who knocked off previously unbeaten Deer Park earlier in the week, a 41-31 win.
Shai Fields led the Oilers with 12 points. Pearland's offense went completely south in the final period hitting only 2-of-16 shots.
Pearland hosted Pasadena Memorial on Tuesday (late) and then will travel to South Houston on Friday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Oilers will host Deer Park on Tuesday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. and close out the regular season at Dobie on Friday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m.
