PEARLAND — It has been a see-saw season for the Pearland Oilers who are 13-11 on the season after getting a 62-41 win over the Dickinson Gators (4-15, 0-3).
Pearland now has an early 2-1 league mark with wins over Clear Springs (46-43) and Dickinson while falling to Clear Lake.
There really wasn't any real threat that the Oilers would lose to the Gators despite Dickinson taking an early 8-0 lead while it took 5:28 for the Oilers to finally score on a three-pointer by Keith Lawson to cut the lead to 8-3.
Up until that time, Pearland spent the early going missing shots or turning the ball over as the first quarter ended with the Gators clinging to a 12-7 advantage.
Things began to turn in Pearland's favor at the start of the second quarter as the Oilers tied up the game 12-12 after a 5-0 run with 6:20 left in the period thanks to Jay Hedgman who got the hot scoring hand.
Pearland outscored the visitors 21-8 in the second period with Hedgman tossing in nine points including a 3-pointer. Cameron Juniel and Cameron Reynolds both scored a pair of field goals while Taylor Adams added a 3-pointer for a 28-20 halftime lead.
The Oilers took over the game in the second half outscoring Dickinson 15-10 in the third as Hedgman added five more points while Derrick Harris got in on the scoring parade with a trey and field goal giving Pearland a 43-30 lead going into the final eight minutes of the game.
Reynolds got hot in the final quarter hitting two long-range three's and a free throw for seven points in leading the Oilers to a 19-point scoring barrage while the Gators struggled to score 11 down the stretch in the 62-41 loss.
Hedgman led the Oilers with 16 points while Reynolds was close behind with 15. Harris and Juniel both finished with 10 points giving Pearland four players in double digits.
Juniel and Reynolds also had big nights on the boards on both ends of the court.
Head coach Steve Buckelew has the making of a playoff team this year, but the Oilers will need to sharpen up their scoring attack at the start of each game.
At the start of district play, Clear Brook (3-0) and Clear Lake (3-0) are the early leaders while Pearland (2-1) and Clear Creek (1-1) are in the third and fourth place positions. The season is far from over so it is anyone's opportunity to advance to the post-season.
Clear Lake 62 - Pearland 54
The slow offensive start hurt the Oilers when they traveled to face the Clear Lake Falcons as Pearland fell behind 11-4 at the end of the opening period.
The Falcons continued to build on the early momentum with a 21-15 second quarter for a 32-19 halftime advantage.
Pearland outscored Clear Lake 18-15 in the third and 17-15 in the final frame but the first half lead was too much to overtake the Falcons in the 62-54 loss.
Cameron Reynolds led the scoring attack with 19 points for the Oilers. Derrick Harris added 15.
The Oilers faced Clear Creek on Tuesday (late) and then will host Brazoswood on Friday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. Clear Brook will come to Pearland on Tuesday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m.
