Pearland Lady Oilers
The Pearland Lady Oilers split their district games last week to stay in the hunt for a place in the post-season.
Pearland fell to Clear Creek 56-52, but the Lady Oilers will look at this game as one that got away.
The Lady O's out scored the Lady Wildcats 11-10 and 18-17 in the first two quarters for a slim 29-27 lead at intermission.
But Pearland couldn't find the basket in the third quarter as Clear Creek outscored Pearland 14-4 to build a 41-33 lead entering the final frame. The Lady Oilers made a strong effort to pull out the win scoring 19 points down the stretch, but Clear Creek countered with 15 to hold on to the four-point district win.
Johnasha Manning led the way for Pearland with 15 points while Keara Hudnall and Jasmine Butler both scored 10 points.
Clear Creek was led by Britney Branch who was a scoring machine with 35 points.
"We had no defense against Britney," head coach Donna Vacek said. "Their defense killed us."
Pearland 66 - Brazoswood 40
The Lady Oilers got back on the winning track with a lopsided 66-40 win over Brazoswood. Kiara Freeman led the offense with 18 points followed by Keara Hudnall (14), and Jasmine Butler (11).
Pearland won all four quarters beginning with a 16-10 lead in the first period. The Lady O's really caught fire in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Bucs 23-9 for a 39-19 lead at halftime.
The Lady Oilers took the second half 27-21 to post the 66-40 final score.
Pearland will host Alvin on Friday, Jan. 20 and Clear Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 24. All games begin at 7:00 p.m.
Friendswood 71 - Ball High 48
Senior Morgan Marino scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Friendswood Lady Mustangs to a district win over Ball High 71-48.
The game was relatively close in the first half as the Lady Mustangs led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. Friendswood took the second quarter 12-9 for a 27-22 halftime lead.
The Lady 'Stangs came out more aggressive on offense, sparked by a stronger rebounding effort, resulting in a 25-11 third quarter for a 52-33 advantage entering the final quarter.
Marino was the top offensive weapon in the second half with 14 of her game-high 20 points while also controlling the boards with nine rebounds.
But she got plenty of help as Kristen Van Riper scored 16 points while grabbing seven boards and Skylar Murphy added 14 points. Junior Jill Bergeson fired in nine points and nabbed 11 rebounds. Sophomore Shelby Pioterek added six points while Kesser Hurd scored five points.
Dawson 54 - Santa Fe 39
The Dawson Lady Eagles took out the Santa Fe Lady Indians to remain in the hunt for a place in the post-season.
At the present time, there are four teams competing for the three remaining playoff spots as Manvel still sits atop the leaderboard at 10-0. Clear Falls, Friendswood, La Marque are the other three teams that are locked in a battle for post-season.
It appears that it will come down to the final games of the season to determine who will get to extend their season.
Dawson beat Santa Fe 54-39 as Olivia Dawson scored 15 points while Domonique Criddle added 14 to pace the Lady Eagles on offense.
Dawson took the first quarter 15-9, but Santa Fe rallied in the second period 14-11 leaving the Lady Eagles with a 16-15 halftime lead.
The Lady Eagles used a strong defensive effort in the third quarter to limit the Lady Indians to only four points while Dawson score 10 to increas their lead to 26-19 advantage.
Dawson poured in 18 points in the final frame while Santa Fe came up short with 12 to post the 54-39 final score.
Clear Falls invades Dawson on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m. and then Friendswood will come to Dawson on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be important in determining the teams for the playoffs.
