LA PORTE — After only four games in District 22-5A -- it is pretty clear the four teams that will be competing for the district title and playoff spots and the four teams that will be staying home.
At the present time, Deer Park (4-0), Pearland (3-1), La Porte (3-1), and South Houston (3-1) are the front runners while Dobie (1-3), Sam Rayburn (1-3), Pasadena Memorial (1-3), and Pasadena (0-4) are in the bottom tier of the district standings.
However - it is still in the first round and the teams at the bottom could make a miracle run to get back into contention.
Pearland opened up league play with wins over Pasadena and Sam Rayburn.
The Oilers traveled to La Porte and came up short against the Bulldogs 35-33 to drop their first league game.
The first half put Pearland in an early hole as the Bulldogs outscored the visitors 15-6 in the first eight minutes. Neither team put up any impressive numbers in the second quarter as La Porte nipped the Oilers 7-6 for a 22-12 halftime lead.
Pearland showed some improvement on offense with 11 points while the defense held the Bulldogs to only four points allowing the Oilers to get back into the game 26-23 entering the final frame.
The Oilers took the final eight minutes 10-9, but it wasn't enough to get the win.
Junior Shai Fields led Pearland with 13 points while Ian Gray added 10.
Pearland 53 - Pasadena Memorial 42Shai Fields scored 17 points and Kevin Williams tossed in 11 to get Pearland back on the winning track in district play with a 53-42 win over Pasadena Memorial.
The Oilers used a strong first quarter 16-6 to set the tone for the outcome of the game. However, Memorial could only score three points in the second quarter while Pearland also struggled with seven points for a 23-9 lead at intermission.
The two teams found their scoring touch as Pearland took the third period 15-14 for a 38-23 lead entering the fourth frame. Memorial outscored the Oilers 19-15, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win.
Pearland played host to South Houston on Tuesday (late) and will travel to league-leading Deer Park on Friday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Oilers will host Dobie on Tuesday, January 26 at 7:30 p.m.
