Pearland hits slump in district competition

PEARLAND — It has been an up and down season for the Pearland Oilers with it mostly being down in district as head coach Steve Buckelew has seen his team drop to 2-4 in district with two consecutive losses after slipping past cross-town cousin Dawson 57-56. Dawson finished atop the district leaderboard after the first round with a 5-1 mark in their quest to repeat as district champions.

Since that narrow win, the Oilers have fallen to the George Ranch Longhorns and the Brazoswood Buccaneers. The other two losses were by a total of three points to Alief Elsik and Alief Taylor.

Now that the first round has concluded, the Oilers are going to need to challenge themselves to turn things around so they will be able to continue their season in the post-season.

The Oilers entered the season as the defending District 23-6A co-champions that they shared with Dawson, but now they are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.

Pearland faced a red-hot George Ranch team that knocked off league-leading Alief Taylor last week.

As usual, the game was another close one as Pearland edged the Longhorns 10-8 in the opening quarter and continued to hold the slim lead in the second period 8-6 for an 18-14 halftime lead.

But George Ranch took over in the third quarter with a 15-6 run giving them a 31-24 lead entering the final frame.

The Oilers weren't able to get a come-back going in the fourth quarter as George Ranch took the period 14-12 and the game 45-36.

Ovidio Perez led the Oilers on offense with 14 points while Javonne Lowery tossed in 10.

Pearland was 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

Brazoswood 44 - Pearland 41

The Oilers come out cold against the Brazoswood Buccaneers and trailed throughout the first half as the Bucs took the first quarter 14-5 and maintained the lead in the second period 13-12 for a 27-17 lead at intermission.

But the third quarter featured a different Pearland team as head coach Steve Buckelew improvised full-court pressure that saw the Oilers get multiple turnovers by the Bucs resulting in an 18-6 turn around leaving the score tied at 35-35 entering the final quarter.

Brazoswood finally went back in front 44-41 with only seconds left in the game. The Oilers attempted a couple of 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds only to see the ball hit the front of the rim and bounce away for their second consecutive league loss.

Ovidio Perez and Javonne Lowery led the third quarter come-back with 11 and seven points respectively.

Perez finished the game with 16 points while Lowery also tossed in 16.

The Oilers were 10-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Pearland is now 2-4 in league action.
