Lady Oilers close out district with perfect record

The No. 16 state-ranked Pearland Lady Oilers completed the 2023-2024 basketball season with a perfect 12-0 district record and captured their third straight league championship with a 77-50 win over Alief Taylor.

The Lady Oilers are now 31-4 overall and prepare to make a deep run in the post-season like they did a year ago when they won the 6A Region III crown to advance to the 6A state basketball tournament.

Pearland got another strong effort from freshman point guard A'zyua Blair who scored a game-high 25 points while dealing out six assists and getting four steals in the game.

Blair got plenty of help as senior Nyah Hardy and junior Eliece Perry both scored 15 points while freshman Shiloh Grays tossed in 10 points.

The Lady O's took the opening quarter 18-14 and continued to stay in front of the Lady Lions in the second period 20-19 for a 38-33 lead at intermission.

The second half belonged to Pearland as they stretched the lead 20-7 as the offense continued to add points to their total while defensively, they limited Taylor to only seven points. That sent the Lady O's into the final frame with a 58-40 advantage.

Pearland closed out the league contest 19-10 to post the 77-50 final score.

The Lady Oilers will face the Clear Creek Lady Wildcats on Monday, February 12 at Clear Springs HS at 6:30 p.m.
