PEARLAND — The Pearland Lady Oilers are not having their typical softball season as they fell to the Brazoswood Lady Buccaneers 13-5 in a District 23-6A first-round contest.
The Lady Oilers close out the opening round of league play with a 3-3 mark which is unnatural for Pearland head coach Laneigh Clark.
"We're having a tough year so far," Clark said. "We just aren't a very good team right now as we are committing too many errors and our hitting is not the strongest."
The Lady Oilers proved her point with a stunning 13-5 lopsided loss to Brazoswood.
Brazoswood twin sisters Morgan and Megan Smith each hit home runs to lead the Lady Bucs to the lopsided win.
The Lady Bucs jumped to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first and second innings and then used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away the win.
Ashlin Moreno paced Pearland's hitting attack with three hits and three RBIs.
Pearland will host Houston Episcopal in a non-district game next Tuesday which will feature the Pearland Girls Softball Association Easter Egg Hunt.
George Ranch 7 - Pearland 4
Pearland traveled to face the George Ranch Lady Longhorns and returned home with a disappointing 7-4 district loss.
The Lady Oilers are the defending district champions and they already have three losses after the first round of league play.
Pearland senior pitcher Adrianna Chavarria lasted only one inning as the Lady Horns scored four runs on four hits while the Lady Oilers committed three errors in the bottom of the first frame.
The Lady O's scored two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead, but that was quickly erased in the bottom of the first giving George Ranch a 4-2 advantage.
George Ranch added a run in the bottom of the second off relief pitcher Alyssa Fort who gave up two runs in two innings with two strikeouts.
Trailing 5-2, Pearland scored a run in the top of the third, but the Lady Horns answered with runs in the third and fourth frames for a 7-3 lead.
Pearland managed to score a run in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough as George Ranch held on for the 7-4 district win.
Top hitters for Pearland was Lauren Ochoa who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Gabrielle Davila was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Kaylee Buck was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
