Pearland splits with George Ranch and Brazoswood

PEARLAND — There is a reason why the George Ranch Longhorns are the No. 1 state-ranked 6A team and the Pearland Oilers found out why in a 11-4 District 23-6A loss.

The Oilers had to face pitching ace Joseph Menefee, a Texas A&M commit, and the standout player dominated on the mound and in the batter's box.

Menefee was 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples, one double, two runs scored and three RBIs while pitching five innings and allowing six hits, two runs, seven strike outs, and three walks.

The Longhorns set the tone early as they scored four runs in the top of the first to grab a 4-0 lead off Pearland starter Garrett Grothe.

The Horns increased the lead with four more runs in the third for a commanding 8-0 advantage off Grothe and relief pitcher Aeneas Enriquez.

Menefee doubled in the first inning and then tripled in the third to start the four-run parade.

The Horns didn't get another hit in the frame, but they got help from the Oilers as the next six batters reached base on a pair of walks, a fielder's choice, a hit batsman, a force-out and an error.

The Oilers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own.

Matt Adams opened with a walk and then Mason Lytle, Jacob Whitehead, and Andrew Flores hit consecutive singles to cut the lead to 8-2.

Ranch scored a run in the six and two more in the seventh to lead 11-2 entering the final at-bats for the Oilers.

Pearland showed no quit in their final inning as they scored two runs as Flores got his third hit of the game.

"I'm proud of the way we fought back," said Pearland head coach Anthony Scalise. "We have to do something to jump-start the kids.

"We didn't give ourselves a chance. They're the No. 1 team in the state, and they can really pitch and swing it."

George Ranch improved to 20-1 overall and 4-0 in district. Pearland is 10-11 overall.

The Oilers actually outhit the Horns 8-7 as Flores was 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Pearland hitters.

Grothe took the loss pitching after allowing two hits, seven runs, one strikeout, and four walks in 2 1/3 innings.
