Keith Freund and Kyle Cross hit back-to-back singles and then Matt Rhodes smashed a single to centerfield scoring Freund and Cross to give the Oilers a comfortable 6-1 advantage.
Pearland iced the game in the third inning with five runs on three hits with La Porte helping the cause with two miscues in the field. Matthews, DeKerlegand, and Hartson got the hits that sparked the offensive outburst for an 11-1 lead.
Lefthander Matt Rhodes polished off the Bulldogs in the final two innings with the game ending on a 369-foot fly to centerfield by La Porte's best hitter Kendrick Perkins. Rhodes, who threw only 52 pitches, went the five-inning distance as the game ended with the 10-run mercy rule. Rhodes gave up six hits, one run, and struck out three while issuing no free passes and showing excellent control of his pitches.
