Lady Oilers sweep Clear Springs; Deer Park next

PEARLAND — Pearland took care of business in the area round of the Class 6A Region III playoffs with a two-game sweep over Clear Springs 4-0 and 12-2 to advance to the region quarterfinals where they will face No. 1 state-ranked Deer Park.

Pearland is now 25-5-1 on the season and Deer Park is 33-2. The Lady Oilers lost to the Lady Deer 8-0 in the Haynie Tournament earlier in the season.

The two state-powers will meet in a best-of-three series at Dawson High School on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (if needed).

Meanwhile, the Lady Oilers took care of business against Clear Springs in order to move to the next round.

There wasn't any question as to which team was going to win the best-of-three series.

In the first game, Pearland took advantage of a strong pitching performance by Alyssa Denham who gave up no runs, seven hits, while fanning 12 batters.

Pearland was led on offense by Lindsey Stewart who went 3-for-3 at the plate sparking Pearland to a 4-0 victory. Stewart tripled in the fourth inning and singled in the first and fifth innings while scoring one run.

The Lady Oilers added three more runs in the top of the fourth. Aileen Garcia started the inning with a single, scoring Stewart. That was followed up by a double by Kaylee Buck who plated Ashlin Moreno and Madison Clements.

Sydney Gutierrez added a double with one RBI.

In the second game, Pearland took control early and ended the game after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Pearland scored five runs in the bottom of the second and fourth frames while Clear Springs managed a home run in the top of the fourth and another run on an error in the fifth to make the score 10-2.

However, the Lady O's added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 12-2.

Pearland head coach Laneigh Clark went with Adrianna Chavarria in the pitching circle and she responded by allowing only one earned run, three hits, one walk, and striking out nine in five innings to get the win.

Hitting stars for Pearland included Kaylee Buck who was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one RBI. Natalie Romeo who scored a run and got one RBI. Ashlynn Walls who was 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Sydney Gutierrez who was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kaylee Hoppens who was 1-for-1 with one RBI. Lindsey Stewart who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI including a triple. Alyssa Denham who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs including a home run. Madison Clements who was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

So far, Pearland has outscored their two playoff opponents 27-2 and they will need a strong offensive showing against Deer Park.
