HOUSTON — Former Pearland quarterback Sam Allen was honored last week with the J.T. Barger Leadership Award which is presented annually to one senior athlete from the Greater Houston area.
The J. T. Barger Leadership Award is named for former Kingwood High School huddle member and FCA officer who died November 2000. It is presented to an outstanding high school athlete who embodies the character of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes by focusing on making a difference in the community.
Allen led the Oilers last year to an undefeated regular season and the District 22-5A championship. Pearland advanced to the Class 5A Region III Division I state quarterfinals before falling to Hightower to finish with a sparkling 12-1 mark.
The award is in conjuction with the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association as they held their third annual Ed Biles Golf Tournament at Oak Hurst Golf Club.
The event raises scholarships for children of GHFCA members. About 100 coaches, parents and sponsors came out to support the cause.
Biles is a former head coach for the Houston Oilers and spent most of his coaching career in the NFL. He is now active with high school football programs in the the Greater Houston area.
Allen will continue his education and playing career at Navarro Junior College this fall.

The younger Allen didn't do too bad as he was 22-3 as a starter at quarterback (new PHS mark) while leading the Oilers to two district titles (District 24-5A and 22-5A).
