PEARLAND — Sophomore Bradley Cuyos had an great first year with the Pearland Oilers and he was honored as the District 22-5A "Newcomer of the Year" after helping lead the Oilers to the 22-5A crown.
Cuyos hit .365 for the season with three doubles, six home runs, 22 RBIs, and 15 runs scored. Two of his homers were grand slams.
The Oilers had five players named to the All-District first-team that included:
Senior All-State pitcher Matt Rhodes who had a 9-2 mark with 61 innings pitched and a 1.84 ERA. Opposing hitters had a .228 batting average against the southpaw. Rhodes also hit .302 with four doubles, two triples, 15 RBIs, and 42 runs scored.
Senior Drew DeKerlegand had a .462 batting average with 11 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 30 RBIs, and 47 runs scored.
Senior Kelly Cross, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins, hit .423 with 17 doubles, seven home runs, 41 RBIs, and 34 runs scored.
Senior Kyle Cross hit .348 with eight doubles, one triple, 21 RBIs, and 15 runs scored.
Junior Brock Hartson hit .320 with five doubles, 26 RBIs, and 17 runs scored.
The Oilers had two players named to the All-District second-team and they were:
Junior Michael Matthews hit .307 with three doubles, one triple, one home run, and 35 runs scored.
Senior Keith Freund hit .268 with five doubles, three triples, one home run, 13 RBIs, and 23 runs scored.
The Oilers beat Beaumont West Brook and Fort Bend Kempner in the first two rounds of the playoffs before Brazoswood eliminated the Oilers in the 5A Region III quarterfinals. Pearland entered the season as the defending 5A Region III champions. The Oilers finished with a 29-10 overall mark.
