Tydelski named "Player of the Year"
June 29, 2009
PEARLAND — She might be petite in stature -- but 5-2 Jensen Tydelski received the biggest honor by the Houston Chronicle when she was named as the softball "Player of the Year" for the 2009 season.
Tydelski's physical size is very deceiving compared to her competitive heart. The University of Louisiana at Lafeyette signee has received almost every accolade possible after being one of the team leaders for the Lady Oilers who surprised everyone this season by winning the 5A Region III championship while advancing to the 5A state finals before dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Smithson Valley for the state title.
Though it was difficult for them to grasp after the state finals -- time has given the girls a chance to realize their significant accomplishments in finishing second in the state with such a young team.
"The loss hit us all hard at state, but I think the girls and coaches have had a chance to realize that we really had a very monumental season that we will never forget," head coach Laneigh Clark said.
Clark has collected her own share of honors as she was named District 22-5A "Coach of the Year" and then was honored by her peers as the 2009 5A/4A softball "Coach of the Year" by the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association.
Tydelski was named as the Chronicle's "Player of the Year" after she led all of the 5A hitters across the state with 72 hits while batting a sparkling .522. The centerfielder had a double and a triple to go with 13 RBIs, 37 runs scored and a .543 slugging percentage. The swift-footed Tydelski stole 40-of-44 bases to also lead the state in that category.
Joining Tydelski on the Chronicle's All-Greater Houston team was sophomore pitcher Jessica Bowden and junior first baseman Megan Coronado.
One of the most prestigious honors is being selected to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State teams.
The state writers, who cover high school sports across Texas, released their annual All-State teams.
Pearland centerfielder Jensen Tydelski and first baseman Megan Coronado were both named to the Class 5A first-team while sophomore pitcher Jessica Bowden and junior catcher Brittany Marcet were named to the second-team.
Tydelski adds this first-team All-State honor to the Chronicle's "Players of the Year" and also being named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A/4A East All-Star squad that will play the West All-Stars in July.
Coronado was a first-team All-State pick after hitting .371 with 37 runs scored, six doubles, seven triples, and 27 RBIs as the leadoff hitter. Coronado stole 24-of-26 bases.
Brittany Marcet was a second-team selection after she hit .405 while leading the Houston area with 55 RBIs. Marcet had 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and scored only four times since she was usually replaced with a courtesy runner. Marcet had a .632 slugging percentage and a .477 on-base percentage.
Bowden was was named to the second-team after posting a 23-2 record in the pitching circle which included a 1.65 ERA, 174.0 innings, 134 strikeouts, and opponents hitting only .216. Bowden also performed well at the plate with a .367 batting average, four doubles, 21 RBIs, and 30 runs scored. Bowden stole 17-of-20 bases.
The four players gave Pearland the most players from one school placed on the 5A All-State team in the state. Head coach Laneigh Clark was named as a "Coach of the Year" finalist.
