PEARLAND — If the first play of the 2010 season is any indication for the rest of the year, then head coach Tony Heath should be very happy. Of course, the veteran coach knows that one play does not make a season.
After Pearland stopped Houston Madison on their first series to force a punt, the Oilers set up their offense at the Marlins 49.
Senior quarterback Trey Anderson tossed a short pass to senior running back Dustin Garrison and the speedster did the rest as he slipped his way for a 49-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Dylan Nowak added the extra point the the Oilers were on the scoreboard with 8:57 left in the first quarter.
Pearland added two more scores in the second quarter as Cole Staudt caught a five-yard touchdown pass and then Myles Kanipes grabbed a scoring pass covering 22-yards giving the Oilers a comfortable 21-0 halftime lead.
The Oilers coughed up the ball to the Marlins to begin the second half and Reginald Smith scored on a two-yard run with only 22 seconds gone in the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-7.
But Pearland answered as Anderson hit Sam Ukwauchu who made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone for the score and a 28-7 lead.
The Marlins caught Pearland napping on the next series as Joshua Wilson got behind the defensive secondary for a 59-yard scoring bomb from QB Demarcus Willis to make the score 28-14 with 4:57 left in the third.
That would be all the scoring for the Marlins while Pearland added one more score on a two-yard run by Kendall Ehrlich making the final score 35-14.
Pearland outgained the visitors 487 yards to 225.
Anderson completed 16-of-24 passing for 283 yards and four TDs. Garrison had 16 carries for 106 yards while Jackie Robinson had 12 totes for 51 yards.
Garrison had three catches for 84 yards and one score. Ukwuachu had three grabs for 52 yards and one TD. Kanipes had four catches for 55 yards and one score. Vincent Ortiz had four catches for 42 yards. Chad Cobb had one catch for 46 yards giving Pearland a balanced passing attack.
Pearland will travel on Thursday, September 2 to face Fort Bend Kempner at Mercer Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
