PEARLAND — Pearland Oilers defensive coordinator Mark Kanipes was recently notified that we was selected to join nine others to be inducted into the Angleton HS Hall of Fame.
Kanipes is a 1979 Angleton graduate who played football and has been in coaching for 24 years. As a safety and running back for the Wildcats, he received all-district, all-county and all-greater Houston honors.
Kanipes played at Blinn Junior College and then Stephen F. Austin before embarking on his coaching career. Besides coaching at Stephen F. Austin, he has coached at Angleton, San Antonio, La Marque, Plano West, Aldine MacArthur, La Porte and Pearland. Kanipes is now the defensive coordinator for the Oilers.
“This kind of shocked me and it caught me off guard a bit,” Kanipes said of the induction.
At La Marque, he was part of a staff that played in five state championships, winning three.
“This parallels life because it helped me set goals and gave me some discipline,” Kanipes said. “This game gives you a workman’s-type attitude to just keep plugging along, and if faced with adversity, fight through it.”
Kanipes has done an excellent job in leading Pearland to be one of the area's top defensive units.
Kanipes' son, Myles, who is a junior, is one of the top players for the Oilers this season and has been responsible for leading Pearland to a pair of close victories in non-district play.
